PlayStation VR: Exciting Genres Explored
You might as well dream up ideas that are totally crazy, because VR opens a whole new and unexplored world for game developers. From horror to creativity or, sport to racing, it’s an open playing field right now. Like with any great technology, it needs content that is just as amazing, too. Without the combo, it’s a dead duck. With that said, expect new genres to open. This list takes a look at key areas that are likely to become huge at some point with PlayStation VR.
1) Horror
Watch where you look, something might jump out!
Imagine this: You sit down at Halloween and watch a gruesome movie, but what if you could be in that movie? Wow, how scary could VR bring us to the horror genre? In fact, it could be so scary that many simply avoid it. After all, it’s guaranteed to make your heart pump faster than ever imagined. Until Dawn has already shown that gaming can literally make you the decision maker within a movie plot. VR will be the next step. In fact, imagine any of your favorite horror movies, they could all have a VR re-make, which takes you on a journey a movie never could.
What’s happening?
- Paranormal Activity is already a confirmed title for PlayStation VR
What we want to see…
- Scream VR
- Until Dawn VR

2) Creativity
Build it, create it, and experience it.
Who hasn’t visited a theme park and nearly had a heart attack on some of the most thrilling roller-coasters? How about if you built the roller coaster and then got to ride it? Well, this is already a plan from the makers of an upcoming PC game – Rollercoaster Tycoon World. From the screams to the terrified faces, riding a rollercoaster can be quite a thrill. That’s perhaps why it’s a no-brainer that you’ll get the opportunity to do just this with PS VR.
Whilst the makers of Rollercoaster Tycoon World haven’t discussed a PS4 release, or even officially confirmed that VR will be a feature of the game, it’s certainly not ruled out. It’s somewhere they would like to visit, and depending on how well it does on the PC platform, it could at some point become a PS4 and PS VR release. That’s not to mention an upcoming rival is also wanting to do something similar, namely Planet Coaster. Whilst these two titles are a mix of business-sim and coaster building, VR is expected to open a whole new arena for this specific genre. After all, who doesn’t want to build the ultimate rollercoaster and then ride it? Expect this to happen, whoever creates it.
Expect the creativity genre to be a big one with VR in general.

Sports
Snowboard down the Eiger…
OK, so practicing your heading skills in a soccer sim with VR might offer a few laughs, but it’s probably the extreme sports that you would never dream of taking part in which could open new experiences here. PS VR is sure to have raised an eyebrow with the makers of the SSX franchise, after all. Actually, snowboarding could be immense with VR. You might just feel the frostbite as you jump across the snowy mountain passes, or was that just adrenaline kicking in?
What’s happening?
- Headmaster will be a launch title.
- SSX franchise could be ready to enter 8th gen gaming with a PS VR twist.
What we want to see…

Virtual Tourism
Fancy a trip to London?
A trip to London can be very costly, but with PS VR it could be priceless. You’ve looked up some of those favourite destinations on Trip Adviser, but how about virtually visiting them? Questioning if it’s even a game? If you remember PlayStation Home, then you’ll understand that this area could be huge and an interesting genre for gamers. Explore amazing parts of the world that you might never had dreamed of, meet new people – the possibilities are endless. Fancy visiting a historic past event? It could be possible with PS VR.
Virtual tourism is expected to open a whole new realm in the open-world genre.
